M01 — Introduction to Roadbook Navigation
Objective
Understand what a roadbook is, how one instruction is structured, how successive instructions describe a route, and how roadbook information is used together with the terrain to make a navigation decision.

- Not started
- Open debrief

- Practice evidence

- Foundation rule only: if the roadbook and what you see stop making sense together, stop navigating on an assumption.

Evidence 0 / 6 — Work through the orientation lessons. M02 opens when M01 is complete.
Practice
Practice Roadbook 01 — Core Instruments
Use tulip interpretation, distance and tripmeter discipline, CAP confirmation and notes/dangers awareness together during one roadbook ride.
- Tulip interpretation
- Distance and tripmeter use
- CAP / direction confirmation
- Notes and dangers awareness
The practice flow is live: pre-ride, ride and debrief. The roadbook route itself is not issued yet. Completion is rider-recorded, self-reported practice evidence — TNR does not observe or verify the ride.
RB-000 — First Roadbook Ride / Familiarisation stays optional familiarisation after M01. It is not this milestone and does not substitute for it.
State

Unlocks once the M05 material is complete.
Practice
Practice Roadbook 02 — Error Recognition & Recovery
Can I recognise uncertainty early, preserve useful evidence, recover deliberately and re-establish the route? PR-02 applies rhythm, recognition and recovery to one ride while the core instruments keep running underneath.
- Maintain rhythm — current plus next, not reactive navigation
- Recognise when the signals stop confirming each other
- Stop compounding instead of advancing on an assumption
- Find the last confirmed instruction or reference
- Recover, rejoin and confirm the route
M08 unlocks this milestone. The practice flow is live and the roadbook route is still pending, so record a ride only when you have a roadbook you can follow. M09 — Independent Navigation opens once this practice is recorded.
Practice Roadbook 01 — Core Instruments and RB-000 — Familiarisation are separate records. Neither counts for this milestone, and this milestone does not replace them.
State

Unlocks once the M08 material is complete.
Assessment
Final Navigation Assessment
Demonstrate the complete Core Navigation competence on a real practice roadbook, with minimal Academy guidance: read independently, decide independently, recognise independently, recover independently, and debrief honestly.
- Reading a complete instruction without field-by-field prompting
- Deciding independently which information matters most, instruction by instruction
- Holding current and next without losing either
- Telling a harmless discrepancy from a meaningful contradiction
- Holding the navigation state instead of advancing on an assumption
- Naming the last confirmed point and recovering deliberately
- Rejoining, reconfirming and continuing to navigate independently afterwards
- Debriefing the ride honestly, including what was guessed
M09 unlocks this milestone. Its assessment flow and its roadbook are not built yet, so there is nothing to ride or record. Core Navigation stays undemonstrated until this milestone is completed.
There is no score, no time and no ranking. The assessment is a judgement about whether navigation was managed independently and honestly — not a number.
State
Locked
Completing the M09 digital material finishes the Academy's digital teaching. It is not the assessment, and it does not make Core Navigation demonstrated.

Curriculum
Nine core modules, one progression
Objective
Understand what a roadbook is, how one instruction is structured, how successive instructions describe a route, and how roadbook information is used together with the terrain to make a navigation decision.
Practice task
No practice roadbook at this point in the curriculum.
Recovery link
Foundation rule only: if the roadbook and what you see stop making sense together, stop navigating on an assumption.
Evidence required
0 / 6- Understand the navigation loop (M01.1)
- Identify the five information types (M01.2)
- Take one instruction from page to terrain (M01.3–M01.4)
- Explain how the information works together (M01.5)
- State the foundation rule for uncertainty (M01.6)
- Run a complete navigation sequence (M01.7)
Orientation module in progress.
Next requirement
Work through the orientation lessons. M02 opens when M01 is complete.
Modules open in order. Practice roadbooks sit at competence points, not after every module.
Course 02
TNR Advanced — Competitive Rally Navigation
What this course teaches
Keep navigating correctly when pace, workload, pressure and fatigue reduce the time and attention available.
As pace and workload rise, the time and attention available for navigation fall. The answer is not to abandon the Core process, but to run it earlier, more selectively, more efficiently and more robustly.
Advanced is
- The same navigation logic, held together when there is less time to use it.
- Earlier preparation, more selective attention and cleaner confirmation.
- Recognising that workload has become unsustainable before navigation fails.
Advanced is not
- A course about riding faster.
- Permission to reduce your safety margin.
- A racing-technique course.
- A replacement for Core discipline.
Locked
Complete the Final Navigation Assessment before starting Advanced.
Core Navigation is demonstrated once the Final Navigation Assessment has been completed — not when the M09 digital material is finished.
The Final Navigation Assessment is awaiting its assessment roadbook, so it cannot be ridden yet. Until it exists and is completed, the Advanced course stays closed.
Completing M09 does not open Advanced. There is no route from the M09 material into A01.
Advanced modules are A01 — A09. They are a second course, not a continuation of the Core module numbering.
Recovery
Recovery through the curriculum
Foundation rule only: if the roadbook and what you see stop making sense together, stop navigating on an assumption.
Recognise a junction that only partly matches the drawing.
Verify distance before deciding whether to continue.
Verify heading before continuing.
Assess danger before starting any correction.
Keep enough attention free to notice that something is wrong.
Recognise the error and identify the last confirmed instruction.
The complete recovery procedure.
Recover unaided and continue.
Recovery runs through the curriculum: introduced in M01, recognised in M07, trained fully in M08.
Setup
Principles first. Device setup second.
Universal principle
Read the roadbook itself before you learn any device that displays it.
Distance, tulips, heading and terrain behave the same way on every setup. M01 teaches the roadbook, not the hardware.
Your setup, later
These principles stay the same whether you use a digital roadbook reader, DMD2, paper or another supported setup. Device configuration is not part of M01.
- Digital roadbook reader
- DMD2
- Paper
- External tripmeter
