True North Rally

Read. Ride. Recover.

Rally navigation education for adventure and enduro riders.

Learn the roadbook, practise it on real terrain, and recover when the roadbook and the ground stop matching.

01 / What we teach

Following a track is not
the same as navigating.

A GPS line tells you where to go. A roadbook asks you to work it out: read the instruction, expect the terrain, decide, confirm, and know what to do when the information no longer matches the ground.

01

Read

Understand what the instruction asks before the decision point.

02

Expect

Know what the terrain should look like when you arrive.

03

Decide

Commit to the turn deliberately, not by guessing.

04

Check

Confirm distance, heading and terrain still agree.

05

Recover

Act when they stop agreeing.

02 / How it works

Practice to competence

03 / The Academy

Nine core modules. M01 → M09.

Introduce, teach, combine, practise, demonstrate. Practice roadbooks sit at competence points.

M01

Introduction to Roadbook Navigation

Understand the roadbook system before learning any single instrument.

M02

Tulips & Junctions

Read the junction drawing accurately, before you arrive.

M03

Distance & Tripmeter

Make distance a usable instrument instead of a number.

M04

CAP & Direction

Use heading as independent confirmation.

M05

Notes & Dangers

Read the warning early and arrive with margin.

M06

Navigation Rhythm

Run the whole loop continuously, at pace.

M07

Recognising Navigation Errors

Notice the error while it is still small.

M08

Recovery

Stop compounding, anchor, reconstruct, return, re-establish, rejoin, confirm.

M09

Independent Navigation

Navigate a complete route unaided, and debrief it honestly.

04 / Practice roadbooks

Theory ends when the engine starts.

Every practice roadbook states its objective, level, route information, pre-ride preparation and debrief.

First Roadbook Ride / Familiarisation

The first practice roadbook, and the only one in the library today. Practice roadbooks sit at competence points in the curriculum.

05 / Recovery

Recovery starts before
you turn around.

Most riders lose a rally long before they admit they are lost. Recovery is taught from the first module, not as an emergency measure.

01

Recognise

Distance, heading and terrain stop matching.

02

Verify

Check trip, last tulip and heading against the roadbook.

03

Identify

Name the last position you know was correct.

04

Recover

Return to it, then rejoin the roadbook deliberately.

06 / Events

Where the navigation actually counts.

A curated guide to rally, roadbook and navigation events. True North Rally does not organise these events — it helps you arrive prepared.
